Bob Bailey workshop learning - Part 6

1. Hierarchies and relationships are in addition to a training programme. They are not THE programme.

2. Use measurable behaviour. Don't try to work out what you think the animal is thinking. Just watch what it is doing.

3. Before you start to train, see what the animal gives you now. Train to fill the gap.

4. If the animal is nervous or unable to focus - do NOT train. Use Pavlov (classical conditioning). Feed them and help them relax first. Do not try to train an animal which is not ready.

5. If you mark a wrong behaviour, don't cement the error by giving a primary reinforcer (reward). Then try to get it right next time!

6. YOU run the session. YOU make decisions.

7. If you have to think deeply about what you'll do, your timing will be awful. This is why the planning needs to happen before you train.

8. The clicker is only forgiving if you want sloppy behaviour.

9. When the dog is throwing behaviours, this shows a lack of trainer discipline. The longer behaviours are not on cue, the longer they will keep reappearing.

10. Have a philosophy. This guides you to act when you don't know what to do.

11. Quick delivery of the reward is essential. Otherwise you get (and reinforce) a whole lot more behaviour.

12. Practise your mechanical skills (including treat delivery.) Volunteers did a session seeing how many treats they could deliver in 15 seconds - into a big bowl close and far away; into a small cup close, far away, on its side.
