Remember that breed differences will affect what you see. Some breeds have wrinkled faces, hair over the face, rounded eyes etc. Familiarise yourself with your own dog's body language in different emotional states.
Here are some of the things you can expect to see when a dog isn't calm. It's not a full list. There are many more subtle signals.
*Tense, stiff body language, including ears and tail.
*Tense, stiff movements including wagging a rigid looking tail.
*A furrowed brow.
*Very tense erect ears or flattened ears.
*Raised paw.
*Lip/ nose licking
*Whale eye (showing the white).
*Avoidance - turning the eyes, head, whole body away or trying to leave.
*Dropping to the ground belly up in a tense way.
*A tucked tail.
*Irregular breathing, heavy panting, breath holding.
*A tense mouth - might be closed.
*Eyes rounded, pupils dilated.
*An intense stare, stalking behaviour.
